Oskol River. Spring Motive

Melting ice drifts down the Oskol river in long white rafts, and Arkady Rylov catches the exact hour when a Russian spring turns the water to moving silver. High water floods the low banks, and the current carries the winter away in broken sheets. Pale sky washes the horizon, while flooded willows and dark stretches of pine line the far shore, their reflections doubled in the cold current. Meltwater channels cut pale ribbons through dark thawing earth in the foreground. A sunlit study or bright hallway suits this spring flood best, anywhere that welcomes the seasons first thaw.
