Oranges

Oranges crowd a dark tabletop, heaped so tightly their skins touch, rendered by Pyotr Konchalovsky with the heavy brushwork that made his Russian still lifes famous. The fruit fills nearly the entire field. Loaded strokes of cadmium and chrome yellow model each round, the pitted peel built from short dabs of thick paint. Cool green shadow pools where fruit presses against fruit. Behind the pile a deep umber ground sits close, so the heap seems to push forward out of the dark. A kitchen, a dining room, a breakfast nook: wherever the day starts with fruit, the color holds its heat through the morning.
