On the Way to Shekar Dzong

A footpath climbs through thin Tibetan air toward a white fortress, the route Nicholas Roerich followed in On the way to Shekar Dzong. Riders and pack animals move single file up the slope. Cobalt and ultramarine fill the sky, hard-edged against snow ridges that carry little shadow. The trail runs dry ochre, scored with short, choppy brushwork, and the dzong walls rise in pale stepped tiers above the valley. Travelers are dark strokes, their line pulling the eye toward the gate. It belongs in a quiet study or reading nook, a room where mountain distance and cold clear light get the attention they ask for.
