On the Shore

Waves break and recede, leaving a band of wet sand across the foreground of On the Shore. Kimon Loghi builds his seascape from quick, loaded brushwork, the water catching pale light at its crest. Foam whitens where the swell meets land. The sky hangs hazy and pale above the horizon, so the eye settles on the shoreline itself: damp sand in rose-grey, shallow water turned glassy green, reflections pooling where the tide has just withdrawn. The paint sits thickly in the surf line and thins to a whisper toward the horizon. Suited to a hallway or a seaside reading room, where the quiet rhythm of tide and shore can carry the light of the whole space.
