About this work

On the Lake Shore Near Bronte

Wind pushes across the shallows at Bronte in this lakefront landscape by J. E. H. MacDonald of the Group of Seven. Water, shore grass, and low sky hold the whole composition. Heavy pigment drags across the ground in thick, directional strokes. Deep blues and greys build the lake surface while ochre and sienna warm the sand and driftwood along the waterline. Clouds sit low, their movement caught in short, restless passes of the brush. The shoreline curves gently, untamed and quiet. A lakeside cottage, cottage-country hallway, or reading room with pale linen and weathered wood suits its mood well.
