On the Falaise, Under the Umbrella

A lone figure holds an umbrella against the wind on a chalk white cliff, the sea churning far below. Gheorghe Petrascu built the scene from thick, directional strokes of paint. The falaise itself takes up most of the picture plane, its pale surface broken with slate grey and bruised violet shadows. The umbrella reads as a dark dome, its ribs hinted at in quick dark lines, while the figure below leans hard into the gust. Salt light bounces off the water in short dabs of cobalt and cream. Suited to a study or a hallway facing north, where the cool palette will not be flattened by afternoon sun.
