Chalk cliffs rise sheer from the Baltic, their white faces scored with grey veining. Max Pietschmann sets the eye low, among dark pines leaning seaward, then lifts it up the cliff wall to a sky scoured clean. On the coast of Rügen reads as an afternoon painting, wind in it. The palette runs cold and clean. Bone-white chalk, deep spruce green, a band of water in slate and steel blue. Brushwork on the cliff face is short and dry, dragged across the weave to catch the crumbly texture of the stone, while the foliage below is worked in heavier, darker strokes. Thin cloud streaks the upper sky. A study, a hallway, or a quiet reading corner. Any room with plain walls and north light gives these Baltic whites and greens the calm they ask for.
