Two figures lean on a balcony rail, a woman and her companion, suspended above a garden that glows rose and violet in the failing light. Konstantin Somov sets the whole scene there, at the rail, in that held pause before speech. Look at the paint itself: gauzy silk rendered in thin opalescent strokes, a fan half-open in one gloved hand, the balustrade catching last warmth in apricot and dusty pink. Below, clipped hedges dissolve into blue shadow. Somov belonged to the World of Art circle in St Petersburg, and his Symbolist sensibility shows in every lingering brushstroke, the flirtation half-finished, the evening half-spent. A reading nook or boudoir suits it, somewhere lamplit and unhurried, where that suspended moment can keep hovering.
