Ominous

Storm light gathers over a low horizon in Ominous by Nicholas Roerich. The sky carries the weight of the whole composition, pressing down on the dark land below. Deep violet and charcoal clouds churn in broad loaded strokes, their edges dragged and softened where wind scours them apart. Beneath, the terrain compresses into band of indigo hills and a thin cold gleam along the water, painted in the flat tempered tones Roerich favored in his Russian landscape period. Nothing flickers; the color sits dense and matte, waiting. A quiet reading nook or study with pale walls gives these heavy blues the stillness they ask for.
