Olivenwald

Slender trunks lean and twist through Olivenwald, an olive grove set down by Otto Mueller in flat, simplified shapes. Silvery leaves press close, massed into layered clusters. Distemper over coarse burlap gives the surface a chalky dryness, the weave faintly visible beneath thin color. Black contour lines edge every stem in the Die Brücke manner, sage green foliage flickering above warm ochre ground. Two pale limbs cross near the center, forked with a single sure stroke. A quiet study or bedroom alcove suits it; the low tonal range and unhurried rhythm read best in soft lamplight, close at hand.
