Olive-wood

Olive wood dominates the field, its grain spiraling in bands of honey, caramel, and pale cream around a single dark knot. Pyotr Konchalovsky paints the timber at close range, letting no background interrupt it. Paint sits thick on the surface, each stroke dragged in the direction of the grain so the wood seems oiled and polished. Growth rings tighten toward the cut end, saw marks run light across them, and burls swell where branches once broke away. Browns deepen to umber at the shadowed side. Hang it in a study or reading nook, where walnut shelves, leather spines, and old brass share its amber warmth.
