Old Trees at Dusk

Towering trunks of old growth conifers fill the frame in Old Trees at Dusk, an Emily Carr forest scene where twilight swallows the upper branches and the ground falls into shadow. Carr builds the scene in sweeping oil brushwork, the bark ridged in grey and umber strokes while a band of violet dusk glows between the crowns. Moss hangs from limbs, roots grip a darkened forest floor, and every trunk leans with wind worn age. A reading room or stairwell suits its deep greens and hushed light, especially against pale plaster where the violet sky can carry the whole composition.
