Old Time Coast Village

Cedar houses lean over the shoreline in Old Time Coast Village, their rooflines swallowed by a wall of rain forest that presses right down to the tide line. Emily Carr paints the village from the water, the way a canoe would find it. The brushwork is thick and urgent, loaded with greens that veer from bottle dark to yellowed moss. Gabled dwellings in faded ochre and weathered grey huddle beneath trunks rendered in sweeping, almost sculptural strokes. Sky shows through the canopy in small torn patches of cold blue. A reading nook or study with natural wood and linen suits this northwest coast scene, where forest and village share one restless breath.
