Old Pskov

White stone churches of Old Pskov cluster behind a low horizon in this Nicholas Roerich composition, their domes and drum towers caught in cool northern light. The title alone names a city of fortified walls and ancient sanctuaries. Roerich paints the buildings in flat, mineral whites and pale greens, letting thin shadows do the modeling. The foreground reads as rough earth and scrub, worked in broad muted strokes, while the sky above settles into soft silver and grey. Everything sits quiet and compacted, as if seen across centuries rather than from a nearby hill. It belongs in a study or library, anywhere that favors northern landscapes and contemplative Russian subject matter.
