Old Mill Church near Compiegne (Oise)

A weathered mill and village church press together on the Compiegne hillside in this Old Mill Church near Compiegne (Oise) reproduction after Suzanne Valadon. Slate rooftops tumble downhill while the stone tower holds the composition steady above them. Valadon builds the scene from dense, unapologetic strokes: moss green fields, roof tiles in burnt sienna and rust, the church masonry picked out in cool gray and violet shadow. Her heavy black outlines, borrowed from her years posing for Montmartre masters, sharpen every roofline and fence post. The sky churns in pale cream and gray, brushed fast, leaving visible ridges of paint across the surface. A landscape this earthy and direct belongs in a study, a hallway, or beside a reading chair where its rural quiet can be lived with daily.
