Weathered timber and dark water meet in Old Boathouse, Port Chalmers, where Frances Hodgkins turns a working New Zealand jetty into a study of leaning angles and salt-bleached color. The boathouse tilts on its pilings, roofs drawn in quick graphite-dark strokes, hulls moored alongside in muted blue and rust. Watery washes pool in the shallows while patches of unpainted paper flicker through the sky, a watercolor method that keeps the harbor air moving. Hodgkins, the New Zealand-born modernist who carried her plein air manner into British modernism, lets the shed and shoreline share one loose, breathing outline.
