Oise at Pontoise

Barges ride low on the Oise at Pontoise, the town stacking slate rooftops along the far bank. Gustave Loiseau caught this stretch of river in short, crosshatched strokes of oil. Broken touches of lead white and pale blue flicker across the water, doubling moored hulls and quayside walls. Tiled roofs warm to brick red where low light catches a chimney; poplars line the towpath beyond. The brushwork sits in a fine lattice, underpainting breathing through each ripple. A quiet study, a hallway, or a reading nook with linen curtains gives these cool greys the room they ask for.
