Ocean

Open sea runs edge to edge, swell crossing swell under a heavy sky, in Ocean by Vartan Mahokian, the Armenian marine painter whose eye stayed close to the waterline. The water runs from slate to bottle green as it deepens, each crest dragged pale with a loaded brush. Foam tears into flecks where the swell collapses. Overhead the sky holds one narrow band of cold light, thin cloud streaks running parallel to the waves below. A study or reading room suits a seascape this wide; where the window gives nothing back, the sea keeps moving and carries the eye outward.
