Oarai

A headland shoulders the Pacific at Oarai, surf folding white against dark volcanic rock while the water runs from deep indigo into pale sea-glass green near the shore. Fujishima Takeji paints the Japanese coast with a Western-style brush, layering oil pigment in broad, confident strokes so the foam reads almost thick enough to touch. Above the cliffs the sky sits quiet, a muted wash of grey and soft blue that lets the sea carry all the movement. This coastal seascape suits a study or hallway where cool tones and open horizons set a calm, salt-air register.
