Oarai Coast

Foam slides over dark reef where the Pacific grinds against the shoreline, and Fujishima Takeji catches that collision in Oarai Coast with broad, loaded strokes of oil paint. Slate blue water occupies most of the composition, its crests picked out in short white dabs that still read as wet pigment. Low on the horizon, a pale sky thins to almost nothing, while the wet rocks below hold a sheen of violet and raw umber. A study, a stair landing, or an east-facing hallway gives the sea space to breathe, and the cool palette steadies a sun-warmed interior.
