Oaks and Blueberry Bushes

Blueberry scrub and gnarled oak fill the scene in this wooded composition by the Nabi painter Georges Lacombe, every leaf mass reduced to flat, deliberate color. Lean trunks fork in dark umber outline, the canopy built from overlapping planes of moss and bottle green. Beneath, low bushes spread rounded and dense, small leaves catching cool blue shadow over a ground of layered verdigris and slate. It suits a study or reading nook, where the crowded trunks and hushed undergrowth give a shaded corner the depth of a real forest clearing.
