Oak Tree

One ancient oak holds the whole composition, trunk broad as a doorway, canopy pressing green against a pale summer sky. Pyotr Konchalovsky painted it like a portrait of endurance. Thick oil brushwork does the work of bark: ridges, knots and hollows built up in umber and grey, each stroke laid on like a chisel cut. Sunlight breaks through the leaves in scattered flecks while short grass strokes gather at the shaded base. A study or library with timber shelves and worn leather suits it well; the tree reads like an old companion across a reading room, steady through every season.
