About this work

Oak

An ancient oak commands the view, furrowed bark and heavy limbs spreading wide against a high summer sky in a vigorous Russian landscape by Pyotr Konchalovsky. Impasto loads the foliage, olive and viridian heaped over umber shadow. Sunlight breaks through the crown in pale dabs while the ground warms to ochre where roots grip the slope. The trunk reads almost geological, ridged and cracked, each bough carrying the weight of masonry. A study with leather chairs and low light suits its deep greens, though it holds its own above an entryway console or a reading nook.
