Oak Grove, Carmel

Gnarled oaks crowd a Carmel hillside in this California landscape by Guy Rose, their contorted trunks and silver-green canopies filling the frame edge to edge. Rose built the grove from quick, broken strokes of sage, olive, and deep viridian, letting warm ochre light rake across the bark. Gaps between the branches open onto a soft blue sky, and low brush in dusty rose and dry gold covers the ground beneath. Suited to a study, library wall, or quiet reading corner where a little coastal woodland would feel welcome.
