Nursing Mother and Child

A seated mother fills the picture plane, child at her breast, both rendered with the weight of sculpture. Nursing Mother and Child shows Paula Modersohn-Becker at her most tender and monumental. Dark contour lines press around terracotta flesh and ochre drapery, the brushwork broad and unhesitating. Olive green closes the background flat behind her.
