Novgorod. The church

A white church holds its ground under a wide northern sky, single dome dull silver against the weather. Novgorod. The church by Pyotr Konchalovsky records the old city plainly, without ceremony. Paint sits thick. Impasto ridges model the plastered walls in lead white and cool grey, cobalt shadow pooling along the apse curve. Dark greens of linden and fir press at the base, and the cross above the drum reads as a single loaded stroke. It suits a stairwell or an entryway with strong daylight, where heavy brushwork and sober geometry can anchor a room without competing with household traffic.
