Novgorod. Kukui Tower

A whitewashed drum of stone, the Kukui Tower climbs above its kremlin wall in this Novgorod scene by Pyotr Konchalovsky, its steep tented roof cutting a clean triangle into open sky. Heavy impasto loads the surface: grass in slabbed strokes of viridian and yellow ochre, masonry worked in leaden whites and cool greys, the roof a deep green-brown. Short, squared brushwork gives the weathered stonework weight and sun-warmed volume. It suits a study or hallway with plain plaster walls, where the round silhouette and heavy green palette can carry the room without competing with busy furnishings.
