Novgorod. Kukui Tower

Red brick climbs in tight courses up the Kukui Tower, a round watchtower set above the green ramparts of old Novgorod, painted by Pyotr Konchalovsky in thick, confident strokes. The drum swells against a pale summer sky, masonry laid down in ochre and rose with grey mortar scratched between courses. Grass and low trees crowd the base. A broad shadow splits the cylinder, and small figures on the earthen bank give the fortress its human scale. A study lined in dark wood, or a pale hallway, would let those russet brick tones carry the wall on their own.
