Novgorod. Anthony the Roman

Silver onion domes rise over Anthony the Roman monastery, white walls sunk into green riverbank grass. Konchalovsky painted the Novgorod ensemble head on, brush loaded, sky heavy with moving cloud. Impasto ridges the plaster surfaces; domes read as grey pewter against washed blue. The cathedral bulk anchors the composition, dark trees lean down to the water at left, reflections broken into short horizontal strokes of olive and slate. A pale track runs toward the gatehouse, laid in dry ochre on a darker ground. It suits a study or hallway in plain whitewash. The cool monastic palette deepens around old leather spines and north facing light.
