About this work

Novgorod. Anthony the Roman

White walls and a silver dome rise above the Volkhov in Novgorod. Anthony the Roman, painted by Pyotr Konchalovsky, sets the old cloister against a wide pale sky. Thick, loaded brushwork builds the church out of cold blues, moss green and sunlit cream, the structured touch of Russian post impressionism. Plaster takes the flat light while the river below carries broken reflections of the domes. An ochre track runs toward the monastery gate. A study with slate walls or an entryway beside stone flags gives those whites room to breathe, the riverbank tones kept low and quiet.
