Notre Dame de la Clarte

A Breton chapel crowns its rise above the sea, whitewashed gable catching a cold morning light. Notre Dame de la Clarte shows Gustave Loiseau working en plein air along the Breton coast, where he returned season after season to paint headlands like this one. Short strokes of cream and lead grey build the chapel walls, while the grass slope below runs to yellow green in quick broken touches. A low stone enclosure cuts across the foreground, and the sky presses down pale and humid, brushed wet into wet. It belongs in a study or reading nook, anywhere that favors quiet northern light.
