North Berwick

The East Lothian shoreline takes the frame in North Berwick, Samuel Peploe's view of the Scottish fishing town where the Forve meets the North Sea under a high, quick-moving sky. Peploe builds the harbour scene from short, loaded strokes: slate blue water worked in horizontal dashes, a quay of cream and ochre stone, lobster boats moored bow to stern with their masts tilting against the wind. Whitewashed gables catch a cold coastal light, and the clouds above are dragged on in thick, wet greys that let the canvas grain show through. Everything sits at a slight tilt, the way the town actually feels when the wind comes off the water. A study with good daylight suits it best, or a hallway where visitors pass slowly and the brushwork does its work up close.
