Night Rider

A solitary horseman crosses indigo ground beneath a sky drained to the color of deep slate. Night rider belongs to the visionary world of Nicholas Roerich, where riders travel alone and mountains listen. Look at how the tempera surface carries its darkness: broad flat washes of blue-black broken by pale ridges along the horizon, the horse rendered in a few decisive strokes, hooves barely touching the earth.
