Night

A pale moon hangs over a darkened landscape, its light pooling across water and hillside in cold silver tones. Ciurlionis titled the scene simply Night, and the picture keeps that promise of stillness. Deep indigo and slate blues dominate, broken by a single luminous disc that seems to hold the whole composition together. Bands of cloud move in slow horizontal rhythms, the kind of stacked, musical layering the Lithuanian symbolist favored, as if the sky were a line of notation waiting to be played. Darkness at the edges swallows the outlines of trees and distant roofs, leaving only reflections to trace where the world ends and the water begins. Suited to a bedroom, a dim hallway, or any quiet corner where lamplight and shadow share the walls.
