Night

Moonlight is the subject here. Night by Anna Ostroumova-Lebedeva shows a city after dark, rooftops and chimneys reduced to pale geometry beneath a wide, luminous sky. The woodcut line does all the work: black ink pressed hard against the paper, white space carrying the glow. Look closely and the technique becomes the scene. Crosshatched shadows pile along a rooftop ridge, thin bare branches cut across the moon like scratches on glass, and one small lit window burns against all that darkness. The palette is reduced to ink black, cold grey and the white of untouched paper, the way a winter night actually looks. A quiet hallway or dim study is where it belongs, close to a lamp and a bookshelf, where the black and white contrast reads best.
