Water tanks and chimney stacks crowd the ledge of a Manhattan window in New York Rooftops, My Windows in New York by Mstislav Dobuzhinsky. The émigré symbolist views the city from his own sill. Crosshatched graphite and wash build the scene: dark cisterns on skeletal legs, fire escapes zigzagging down brick façades, a pale sky pressed flat between towers. Slack clotheslines and crooked antennae break the geometry with small human disorder. Suited to a study or apartment entryway, where a view of the city reads best at close range.
