New England Birches

White birch trunks rise through the foreground, their bark built up in thick ridges of cream and grey pigment. New England Birches belongs to Ernest Lawson, the American impressionist who made the New England landscape his own. Lawson lays the paint on heavy and unapologetic. Slender trunks crisscross against a sky of pale blue and lavender, while the ground below glows in ochre, rust and deep green. Dabs of violet cool the shadows where the birches thin out toward a distant treeline. It settles naturally into a study or reading nook, anywhere a quiet autumnal view rewards a long look.
