Boats crowd a harbor of pale water under a sky the color of skim milk. William James Glackens painted New Castle, New Hampshire with quick, loaded brushstrokes, masts tilting every which way above the tide line. Look closer and the paint gets thicker: dabs of rose and viridian catch the hulls, wet sand reflects a low sun, and figures along the shore shrink to gestures of ochre and slate.
