New Abbey, Dumfriesshire

Red sandstone arches, broken and honeyed at the edges, stand against a soft Dumfriesshire sky in New Abbey by Samuel Peploe, ruins set among meadow and hedgerow. Peploe lays the masonry in warm rose and cool grey, each block of stone built up with a firm brush. Grass runs emerald where the light falls and slips into violet shadow beneath the ruined walls, while low rooftops and dark trunks hold the composition steady. It settles naturally into a study lined with oak shelves, or an entryway where stone flags and pale plaster give the muted palette room to breathe.
