Neva through the columns of the Exchange

The Neva stretches wide between the pale columns of the Exchange in this woodcut by Anna Ostroumova-Lebedeva. Water and stone hold the frame in equal measure. Columns rise in ribbed verticals along one edge, their fluting cut in firm parallel strokes. Below, the river runs in long horizontal bands, crossings of the grain catching light like current. Distant roofs and spires sit low on the horizon, rendered in grey and cool ivory. Every tone is built from line, black on white, the way St Petersburg itself is built from light on water. Made for a study or a hallway where a northern city mood belongs.
