Neva Early in the Morning

First light reaches the Neva before the city stirs. Anna Ostroumova-Lebedeva held that brief hour in Neva early in the morning, water and sky still sharing a single pale breath. Thin watercolor washes carry the whole scene, pearl grey expanse and rose flush along the horizon, a granite embankment drawn in cool unhurried strokes. The sun has not yet cleared the Petersburg rooftops. Below, the river keeps its night calm, broken by one long gleam along the current. Quiet rooms suit it best: a bedroom facing east, a hallway, a reading nook where the day is allowed to begin slowly.
