Neva before the Storm — Framed Poster

The Neva broadens into a sheet of bruised pewter, its surface already roughening as the sky above Petrograd side turns the color of wet slate. Rylov paints the river minutes before the weather breaks. Wind has claimed the water first. Gulls ride low over the swell, nearly touching it. Along the far bank, warehouses and spire silhouettes hold their ground in thin strokes of grey violet, while a single tug or barge cuts a pale furrow across the middle distance. The brushwork in the waves is short and load bearing, each crest dragged sideways by the same wind that bends the flag on the mast. A cold sky fills most of the composition, its heavy clouds scraped and reworked until they seem to press down on the water. This belongs in a study or a hallway facing north light, where its grey blues and restless surface keep company with quiet rooms.
