Nelken Auf Orange

Carnations hold the whole canvas. In this Cuno Amiet still life, Nelken Auf Orange, red blossoms on long stems lean across a field of saturated orange, petals worked in thick impasto strokes of vermilion and rose. Amiet, the Swiss Colorist, lets the ground burn while the flowers stay cool and crumpled, green leaves cutting hard diagonals through the heat. Loose, confident brushwork keeps the bouquet alive, closer to a Fauvist experiment than a formal arrangement. It suits a dining room or a sunlit kitchen wall, anywhere warm and social.
