Near Pontoise

A cart track climbs out of Pontoise, pale where wheels have churned the mud, and the town gathers itself on the far slope beneath a sky of quick grey and white. Gustave Loiseau built the scene from short, layered strokes of oil paint, the kind of crosshatched touch that made his landscapes hum. Roofs in rust and slate cluster among full-leaved trees. Fields turn from pea green to harvested ochre as the ground rises, and cloud shadows drift across the plateau like slow boats. A study wall, a hallway, or a quiet reading corner all give this piece of French Post Impressionism the calm backdrop it asks for.
