Kittens crowd a still life table in Natură statică cu mâțișori, a subject Theodor Pallady handled with the same dry wit he brought to his French and Romanian interiors. Fur rendered in quick strokes of cream, grey and soot, the small bodies curled against cloth and crockery. Look at the surface beneath them: a draped linen with folded shadows, a glazed bowl catching a dull glint of light, brushwork laid on thick in places and scraped thin elsewhere. Pallady lets ochre and warm brown carry the background while the cats hold the centre, ears pricked, one paw already testing the tablecloth. A kitchen nook, a hallway bench, a study shelf: anywhere a quiet corner of domestic life wants company.
