Nanda Devi

Nanda Devi rises alone above a sea of ridgelines, her summit wrapped in bands of cold light. Nicholas Roerich painted the sacred peak of the Himalayas as a presence rather than a landmark. The composition stacks plane upon plane: pale glacier blues in the foreground ridges, deeper ultramarine shadows pooling in the valleys, and the great white pyramid of the mountain itself rendered almost weightless against a high, thin sky. Tempera-like layers of color give the snow a powdery, mineral surface, while the gradient from ice white to midnight blue carries the eye upward without a single human figure. Suited to a study or quiet reading room where a horizon of altitude and silence belongs.
