Nan Shan, Tibetan Frontier

Snow ridges of the Nan Shan fold across the Tibetan frontier in long horizontal bands, each crest separated by a vein of shadow. Nicholas Roerich names the range in the title and lets the land answer. The palette cools toward the horizon: pale rose at the drift line, then ultramarine, then a deep indigo ridge that presses against the sky. Ice fields read almost white where the light strikes. Below, barren slopes descend in softened strokes, and a narrow pass suggests the old caravan track between Tibet and the northern plateau. Tempera surfaces of this kind carry a dry, chalky grain, so the snow seems powdery rather than glossy. It suits a study or reading room, hung low where mountain air can settle into the quiet of the wall.
