Nagyváros

A big city presses in from every edge. Scheiber Hugó titled this work Nagyváros, and the picture delivers on the name: rooftops, chimneys and facades stacked in tight, jostling bands across the surface. Look at how the buildings are built. Angular planes of brick red, mustard and slate grey butt against one another, their windows picked out in small dark rectangles like punchmarks. The blocks tilt and lean, giving the whole street a restless, humming energy that Hungarian modernism pursued so single mindedly. Suited to a hallway or a city apartment living room, where the urban clamor of Nagyváros can answer the view from the window.
