Nag Lake. Kashmir.

Nag Lake lies still in its Kashmir basin, and Nicholas Roerich sets the whole scene under a brooding Himalayan sky. Water holds the mountains upside down, ridge for ridge, in cooled blues and slate greys. Look closely and the shore reads in layered tempera strokes, ochre grass thinning into bare rock, snow fields brushed flat and cool at the summits. The lake surface stays glassy, broken only by a single pale reflection near the bank. Roerich tempers his cobalt with milky violet, a signature of his high-altitude studies. A quiet study or reading nook suits it best, somewhere the gaze can rest.
