Murmansk. The polar night

Harbor lamps burn low over the bay while the sun stays below the horizon, and Pyotr Konchalovsky paints Murmansk at the deepest hour of the polar night. Thick oil paint carries the weight of the dark: indigo and violet stacked in heavy strokes across the sky, snowfields holding a cold blue sheen, window glass and dockside lanterns throwing small warm notes onto black water. Rooftops, masts, and cranes read as hard silhouettes against a sky that never lightens. A study or reading nook with pale walls gives the deep blues room to breathe; the lone warm lamplight suits a desk lamp and a winter evening.
